The Environment Agency has warned parts of the UK could face a drought in August if hot, dry weather persists.

People across the country are being urged to use water wisely, with river water levels running extremely low.

Although the exceptional heat is now behind us, it is still imperative to be mindful about our water consumption. Much of England has moved into 'Prolonged Dry Weather' status, which means precautions are already in place.

Not only have we seen an intense period of record-high temperatures and a severe lack of rainfall so far this summer, but we have also seen the driest spring and winter on record since the 1970s.

Household hosepipe bans could be implemented and farmers could have to refrain from crop irrigation if a governmental drought plan is introduced, which could negatively impact their produce.

The Isle of Man is set to introduce a hosepipe ban on Friday, and a strategy for England was discussed on Tuesday.

It's not just the UK facing drought consequences, but also much of Europe, including France, Spain, Italy and Portugal. Across Iberia, reservoirs are 31% down on their 10-year average.
