Will they reach you?
Weather warnings in place as storms grow

Weather mapThunderstorms again spread over mostly western and central areas on the WeatherRadar.

An outbreak of thunderstorms spread across the UK and Ireland over the weekend, and continues today, are you at risk?

Weekend activity

Heavy downpours accompanied thunder and lightning on Sunday, 36.4 mm of rainfall was confirmed to have fallen in Frankley, southwest of Birmingham, with 23 mm falling in one hour.

This intense rain resulted in some flash-flooding, though this was localised and not widespread.

The impact of the storms saw public events cancelled or delayed, including the Parklife Festival in Manchester and the Surbiton Trophy final featuring Andy Murray in southwest London.

Large hail was also reported from Wallingford, Oxfordshire measuring up to 2 cm in diameter.

Continued outbreaks

Two main areas of activity persist today, the first stretches from central/southern England through the Midlands into northwest England and also encompasses eastern and northern Wales. A second active region covers central to western Scotland.

Severe weather warnings are in effect, as seen below.

These areas should see widespread showers and storm activity, mainly from this afternoon into the evening. Localised lightning and heavy downpours are expected.

Hail is again likely, particularly in the southern and central England areas, while large storm cells will also generate gusty winds.

Rainfall amounts could approach 70 mm within a few hours, making flash-flooding possible.

Receiving 20 mm of rainfall within an hour or less will cause some flooding in prone locations such as low-lying roads, 30 mm or more in an hour will cause some more widespread flooding issues.

While 40 mm and more in an hour will often cause significant flooding, especially in urban areas, even in spots that don't usually flood.
