Severe storms have caused extensive damage in the south of France. In Pomas, in the Aude department, a tornado damaged numerous houses. More than 40 people were injured.

Trees were uprooted and roofs were torn off. Around 2,800 households in ten local authorities were temporarily without electricity. Fallen branches also caused several road closures.

The severe weather in the south of France also disrupted air and rail travel. The third stage of the Vuelta a España cycle race was brought to a premature end due to a hailstorm.

From Wednesday evening, heavy thunderstorms are once again expected across large parts of France. However, as things stand, the Mediterranean region is likely to be spared.
