Storm Ashley arrives as winds gust 80mph

Weather warnings in force for Sunday 20th October.

A quieter start, but strong winds and rain in store for Sunday as Storm Ashley arrives.

The last of Friday night's rain will continue to clear eastern portions into Saturday morning, turning drier and brighter through the afternoon.

Plenty of sunshine will be developing in its wake, with temperatures reaching the mid-teens for many.

Through the evening however, a deep area of low pressure, named Storm Ashley, looks to track close to Ireland, starting to drive in heavy rain from the south and strengthening winds.

Heavy rain will continue to push in overnight and into Sunday, with rain pushing eastwards across the UK. Some thundery showers associated with this cannot be ruled out.

Very strong winds are expected across Ireland, with peak winds reaching around 70 - 80 mph in the south, particularly between Belmullet and Skibbereen.

However even elsewhere across Ireland and Northern Ireland, winds are expected to widely gust to around 60 mph.

Large waves are also expected on south-west coasts, coinciding with the supermoon's high tides. Flooding may occur for low-lying coastal areas, with wind-induced surges.

You can check out all the wave and tidal information on the Coast card inside the app, if you are at a coastal location.

Western fringes of the UK may also see wind gusts reach around 60 - 65 mph, perhaps locally higher along exposed western coasts of North Wales around Anglesey, in addition to north-west England for coastal Cumbria around Whitehaven.

It is expected to be a widely windy day with gale-force winds, and while western areas will bear the brunt, even easternmost portions could see winds gust up to around 40 mph.

Winds will remain strong in the north overnight, for Northern Ireland, Northern England and southern Scotland, with rain clearing.
