Nigeria's worst flooding in decades

Nigeria is suffering its worst floods in decades after months of heavy rainfall.

The heavy rain across much of Nigeria, but especially the north-east, has led to devastating flooding, worsened by the release of excess water from a dam in Cameroon. Several other dams across both Nigeria and Cameroon are at risk of overflowing.

Heavy rains over the past week has submerged roads and swept away a major bridge.

Over half a million people have been directly impacted, with 100,000 displaced, and over 300 people reported dead from flooding so far this year.

For farmland, crops have been destroyed, disrupting food supply and with people have been unable to feed themselves.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency have predicted more floods in 2022 than last year due to the excessive rainfalls, likely attributed to climate change.
