Seven planets together: February astronomy outlook

Seven planets together
February astronomy outlook

Man sits with telescope looking up at the Milky Way.

It's a quieter month in terms of astronomical events, but ends with a rare alignment of seven planets.

EventDate
Full Snow MoonFebruary 12th
New MoonFebruary 28th
Planetary alignmentFebruary 28th

The full moon in February rises on the 12th, and is often referred to as the Snow Moon. Like all moons, this was named by Native Americans who noted the timing of this full moon alongside the heaviest snow of the season.

Towards the end of the month, the New Moon comes on the 28th. Offering dark skies, perfect for spotting constellations above.

This is ideal timing for a planetary parade on the same night. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune all come together. Of these, the four closest, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter will be easy to spot after sunset.

Saturn will not be visible without specialist equipment, while a regular telescope will help with Uranus and Neptune.

Check back closer to the time of each even for more information, and forecasts on visibility.
