A rare blue supermoon is set to rise tonight, with the next not expected until around 2037, though visibility will be tricky.

The Sturgeon Moon is extra-special this year, arriving as the fourth full moon of the season it becomes a blue moon.

While the timing of its orbit, coinciding with the full moon, also means our lunar companion will be around 23,000 km closer to Earth than usual, creating a supermoon.

Visibility for the event looks to be poor across the UK, but slightly better for parts of Ireland.

When to look

The supermoon is expected to be at its closest point to Earth at 07:26 pm on Monday evening, and will remain looming large above us until Wednesday.

A band of heavy rain is passing over both countries throughout the day, and covers much of Scotland during the peak. Though parts of south-eastern Ireland will have the best visibility due to cloud cover elsewhere.
