Mysterious holes have started appearing on the ocean floor, and NOAA are calling for the public’s opinion on what may have caused them.

During a dive by NOAA’s Okeanos Explorer, scientists discovered a series of almost perfectly aligned holes in the seafloor, at a depth of over 2.5kms.

The discovery occurred whilst the Explorer vessel was investigating the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which is part of the world’s largest mountain range in the Atlantic Ocean and is still largely unexplored.

The holes are said to look human made, however there are piles of sediment around them that suggest they have been excavated by something.

Some suggestions include a fish ‘walking’ on the seafloor, in the same manner that handfish, or frogfish do. Whilst others are more set on a man-made theory, such as a perforated pipe buried in sediment on the seabed.

This comes after another recent discovery of the eerie ‘Yellow Brick Road’ found on top of an undersea mountain near Hawaii in May.
