Increasingly blustery across the UK

Thursday becomes increasingly blustery across the UK, with gusts approaching gale force across large parts of England and Wales.

As rain moves south, the low-pressure system responsible is also driving strong gusting winds. Towards early Thursday afternoon, gusts of 40 mph become widespread across much of England.

Gale force?

According to the Beaufort Scale, used for measuring winds, speeds of 39 mph are officially classified as being gale force.

Higher altitudes will see stronger gusts, particularly over the Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), and the North Pennines.

Friday's picture

Although the system bringing these winds will pass by overnight into Friday, a separate system is pushing into north-west Scotland by Friday morning.

Here, we see upwards of 50 mph gusts in Scotland's Western Isles, and highs of around 30 mph for Edinburgh.

See both systems on the WindRadar to check the impact near you.
