Hundreds of flood alerts remain in force

Weather radar showing heavy rain spreading across England and Wales. The WeatherRadar shows widespread heavy rain early Wednesday morning.

With a fresh low-pressure system arriving overnight, over 100 flood warnings remain in effect across England and Wales.

As many areas in these regions continue to take stock from flooding in the aftermath of Storm Bert, the latest bout of rainfall will primarily fall in the early hours of Wednesday.

The system will deliver a fresh wave of rainfall into Wednesday morning across Wales, southwestern and southern England, eventually spreading across eastern England as well. While several hours of rain are likely to affect most areas, the heaviest of the rain is expected to remain in the far south, generally near the Channel coasts.

From Devon to Hampshire, Sussex and Kent, 20-30mm are likely to fall through Wednesday afternoon which may in turn lead to some additional minor flooding issues in low-lying areas and near some smaller streams.

Of the warnings in effect, one remains a severe flood warning, indicating a danger to life. This is active in Northampton, along the River Nene at the Billing Aquadrome.

Elsewhere, flood warnings, indicating flooding is expected, and flood alerts, showing flooding is possible, stretch along swathes of central England with the most northerly issued in York.
