Beating 2025's record
Hottest summer on record for Ireland

Temperature map of Ireland for Wednesday 12.08 showing 29°C in Dublin, 26°C in Cork, 24°C in Belfast and 23°C in Galway, with a thermometer icon highlighting the heat.
Among multiple heatwaves in Ireland this summer, the August heat peaked just below the 30°C for many.

Ireland has joined the UK in seeing the hottest summer on record this year, according to provisional data.

If confirmed, this would become the hottest summer since records began 127 years ago, with an average temperature of 16.28°C beating the 2025 record by 0.09°C.

The record comes after multiple heatwaves, including a 13 day spell beyond the heatwave threshold at Moore Park, Co. Cork.

Amid the warmer conditions, sunshine totals across almost the entire country were above the long term average while almost all recorded rainfall totals were below the long term average.

With the lack of rainfall, water use restrictions were implemeted, though the hottest day arrived early in the season after a recording of 32.2°C at Athenry, Co. Galway on June 17th.

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
