Huge waves piled onto the south-west coast of Cape Cornwall amidst Storm Noa on Wednesday 12th April.

The storm system brought wind gusts over 70 mph in the south and west, with exposed locations like The Needles in the Isle of Wight recording gusts of 96 mph.

The strong winds also whipped the sea against the coastline. The exposed location of Cape Cornwall consequently favoured the development of high waves in Noa's strong westerly winds.

During this time of the year, spring tides can also exacerbate wave heights. A spring tide, is a tide higher than average that occurs just after a new moon or full moon.

It is when the Sun, Moon and Earth are all in line, causing a strong gravitational force and amplifying the tide. They occur twice a month, with peak tide times also varying throughout the day and night.

The storm also caused some damage. Hundreds of homes were left temporarily without power and trees were brought down. You can read more on Noa's impacts from our live blog.
