Exceptional temperatures
Is this the same as July's heatwave?

Temperatures expected to peak into the mid-to-high thirties on Saturday, particularly across central and southern EnglandTemperatures expected to peak into the mid-to-high thirties on Saturday, particularly across central and southern England

Whilst the odds are slim for seeing 40C, we’re still seeing temperatures significantly above normal.

This prolonged spell of heat is bringing exceptionally high temperatures, although the chance of seeing 40C is still only at around 5%.

Though a small percentage, 40C would have been impossible on a planet unaffected by human-induced climate change.

Whilst this spell would likely feel a bigger deal if it weren’t for the unforgettable 40C on July 19th, only six days have ever reached over 37C before; two of which have already occurred this year, and could happen again this week.

Are we seeing the same kind of intense heat again?

Heat is building as a result of a broad high pressure system stretching itself overhead, delivering those settled conditions and allowing what we call ‘homegrown heat’ to develop. We are then importing a little boost of hot air from France and Germany towards the end of the week.

It's not quite the same set-up as what we had back in July; days were longer, the sun was stronger and the heat source was North Africa and Iberia.

So, reaching 40C may be a stretch this time, mid-to-high thirties are still well-above normal for us. Check out our tips for staying safe in the heat, and keep track of what's forecasted for your area on our TemperatureRadar.
