Former hurricane Ernesto reaches the west coast of Ireland on Wednesday after making its way across the Atlantic, it now hits the island as a storm depression.

With gusts of up to 62 mph in exposed areas of the western Irish coast, the storm will continue to move across the Irish Sea towards the UK on Thursday, weakening as it does.

At this point, the strongest gusts will only occur over the open sea or at higher altitudes.

Weather warnings for the gusting winds are in effect Wednesday, and more widespread on Thursday as the system continues its journey.

Wet and windy conditions will persist in the coming days as successive low-pressure systems continue to influence our late-summer period.
