Ash appears as rain
Etna eruption on the WeatherRadar

Mount Etna has erupted again, with smoke and volcanic material visible on the WeatherRadar, as plumes of ash are spewed into the sky.

Mount Etna, Europe's tallest and most active volcano, located in Catania, Sicily, erupted once again on Sunday 4th August.

The eruption can be seen above on the WeatherRadar, where you can see the start of it from around 5 am local time, with the appearance of blue shading over the crater, overlaying the cloud of smoke.

In this instance, the blue colouring is now rain, but in fact falling volcanic material. The reflectivity given by ash and tephra ejected from the volcano several km high into the atmosphere, is similar to that of rain.

Following a four year hiatus in activity, eruptions have restarted and intensified particularly in more recent weeks.
