A fantastically mysterious fogbow was spotted between Corgarff and Gairnshiel in the Scottish Grampian Mountains on Tuesday afternoon offering a stark contrast to the bright blue sky behind the white arch.

Also known as a ghost rainbow, fogbows form in a similar way to rainbows with sunlight refracted through water droplets in the sky. The only difference is the size of the water droplets.

In rainbows, the water droplets are bigger enabling us to see more colour refracted through them whereas in a fogbow, the sun is being refracted through much smaller droplets so only the white colour appears.
