Hurricane season comes to a close

This year’s Atlantic hurricane season officially ends with 14 named storms and eight hurricanes, two of which were of major hurricane status.

Whilst the numbers don't particularly stand out, especially given 2021 smashed through the entire named hurricane list, there were some notable damaging hurricanes, especially for the Florida Peninsula.

Prior to September of this year, the Florida Peninsula had gone five years since its last hurricane landfall. The state then got hit with a double whammy of storms.

Ian became the joint fourth strongest hurricane at landfall for Florida, whilst Nicole hit with force as a late-season storm in November.

November 2022 also tied 2001 with the greatest number of hurricanes in any November month, with activity you would typically expect through summer. Ironically, for the first time in 25 years, August saw zero activity in the Atlantic basin.

Whilst there were of course several other storms this season, both Ian and Nicole, along with Fiona, which was one of the most powerful storms ever in Atlantic Canada, are all likely to now be retired from future lists.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1st to November 30th each year, although systems can still form outside this window.
