Cars sent flying
Tornadoes rage across Sicily

Two tornadoes caused severe damage in the Sicilian port city of Marsala on Friday. Eleven people were injured, some by flying debris and shards of glass.

The cyclones initially swept across the sea before making landfall. Once on land, they destroyed several houses, a school, and agricultural land. Cars were swept off the road.

WeatherRadar: The tornadoes formed in the immediate vicinity of a very severe thunderstorm off the west coast of Sicily.

In the Mediterranean region, the storm season reaches its peak in autumn. When colder air meets the unusually warm sea, violent thunderstorms regularly form. If, in addition, the wind changes significantly with altitude, tornadoes are also possible.

Just last week, there were flash floods in Spain, France, and Crete. Several people lost their lives as a result.
