Heavy snow and ice likely
Wintry weekend could spell trouble

Snow and ice warnings are active for this weekend as a complex weather system brings a range of wintry weather conditions.

Cold, crisp air from the Arctic has spread across most of northwestern Europe today, with some wintry showers in the north and a frosty start to the day for many.

More wintry weather is on the way as further showers of sleet and snow will affect parts of Scotland overnight tonight and Friday morning, whilst a widespread frost is expected as well.

Much more significant and disruptive winter weather is likely over the weekend, however, as a new area of low pressure approaches, with rain turning to snow over many parts of Ireland, Wales and England late on Saturday into Sunday.

A few areas may also see a spell of freezing rain for, adding to the potential disruption. While details are still unclear at this stage, some areas in Wales and northern England could see significant amounts of snow, with a few places perhaps becoming cut off for a time.

Be sure to follow our forecast updates, check our weather alerts and plan ahead if you need to travel in the mentioned areas this weekend.
