Winter meets summer - Large temperature contrasts in Europe

Winter meets summer
Large temperature contrasts in Europe

Map of Europe showing frost in Munich and 28 °C in Cyprus. The TemperatureRadar shows persistent frost in central Europe and summer heat in Cyprus.

It could hardly be more different: in Europe, the weather is currently showing its summery and wintry sides. The contrasts are particularly stark at the weekend.

In large parts of Central Europe, the maximum temperatures will only reach minus 2 to plus 2 degrees. At night, it will even get really frosty. The minimum temperatures will drop to as low as minus 10 degrees.

The situation is quite different in the Turkey and Cyprus, where the thermometer shows summery temperatures of 20 to 28 degrees.

The reason for the large differences is a high-pressure system over the eastern Atlantic. Cold polar air is flowing from the northeast to Central Europe on its eastern flank. At night, it cools down even more when the skies clear.

In contrast, very warm air from the Middle East is flowing into the eastern Mediterranean region.

Meanwhile, while not reaching the highs of Cyprus, warmer air does return to the UK and Ireland next week offering relief from the bitterly cold mornings, for now.
