Wildfires sweep across Portugal

Portugal is battling several wildfires, worsened by high temperatures and fanned by strong winds.

Wildfires continue to rage across parts of Portugal, particularly northern and central areas, as over 5000 firefighters tackle the blaze.

In recent days temperatures have widely topped the mid-thirties across the country, reaching highs of 39°C in Coruche and 38°C in Santarém.

Wildfires have raged for several days.

The smoke can be seen on the WeatherRadar above. Gusty winds also reached around 30 mph in the region.

So far at least seven people have died, including three firefighters. On Tuesday 17th September, there were a total of 65 separate fires burning.

Motorways and schools in the area around Porto have been closed, while many homes have been destroyed. Between Porto and Aveiro, ten thousand hectares of land have been burned.
