What does it mean?
Snow and ice warnings in force

Snow and ice warnings are currently in force, but what exactly does that mean?

The Met Office has issued snow and ice warnings across parts of the UK, at present from Wednesday 29th November through to Friday 1st December.

The warnings are currently in force across eastern fringes, where sleet and snow showers will be blowing in. Where snow showers frequent a particular area within the warning region, a few centimetres of snow may accumulate, particularly over higher ground.

On top of that where roads simply remain damp from any earlier showers, icy patches can form as road temperatures fall sub-zero. This can cause slippery and dangerous surfaces.

On many main roads, gritter trucks from various councils will have prepared in advance and salted the roads as a preventative measure. On pavements and some smaller untreated roads, such as country lanes or cycle paths however, it can remain icy.

You can also check out our weather warnings in force inside the app, with the above warnings for slippery surfaces in force for Wednesday 29th November as an example.
