Violent storms hit Dubai

Following near-50°C temperatures, Dubai has been hit by a double whammy of thunderstorms and sandstorms.

On Saturday afternoon, August 5th, parts of Dubai and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, experienced a shift in their weather conditions from glorious sunshine to thunderstorms.

The scattered storms continued throughout the weekend, eventually easing off after Monday August 7th.

The severe weather caused chaos in some areas as gale-force winds, driving rain and reduced visibility from the swept up sand caused damage.

Objects were flying through the air as seen on the video above, and even part of a roof became a dangerous projectile. Buildings were damaged and trees were also uprooted.

Amidst the storm, visibility dropped down to just a few metres in places. According to Dubai Municipality, there were more than 100 emergency calls from citizens over the weekend reporting fallen trees, building damage and flooding.

Although the storms provided some much-needed respite from the incredible heat, temperatures are still expected to remain above 40°C in the coming days.
