Washout Saturday as Storm Antoni arrives

We are set for a Saturday washout with multiple weather warnings in place for winds, rainfall, and later today, thunderstorms thanks to Storm Antoni.

Heavy rainfall passed over much of Ireland overnight and will continue pushing east across the UK as the day progresses. Saturday morning sees the heaviest downpours focused on Wales and the northwest of England before moving on.

Particularly heavy rainfall will reach the West Midlands in the early afternoon, stretching from close to Worcester down to Gloucester, as thunderstorms begin to form.

Southern regions of both the UK and Ireland see storm warnings today for strong winds.

Accompanying the rainfall are unseasonably strong winds. Gusts could reach up to 65 mph in exposed coastal areas, losing some power in-land but still routinely approaching 40-55 mph across southern England, Ireland, and Wales.

These gales stick around into Sunday morning for southeastern England, though not reaching the gust speeds expected Saturday, warnings are still in place.

Responsible for the conditions is an area of low-pressure which first engulfed Ireland just after midnight and pushes east across the UK throughout Saturday. Officially named Storm Antoni on Friday, becoming the first named storm of the season.

With intense periods of heavy rain there is a chance of localised flooding through the day. Be sure to check official flood warnings before starting any trips.
