Icy blooms
Rare frost flowers develop in Tennessee

When freezing temperatures move in, most flowers are long gone. But when conditions are just right, rare frost flowers develop. These icy blooms developed early this morning near Nashville, Tennessee.

The video above shows frost flowers that developed early this morning near Nashville, Tennessee. Conditions were just right for these icy flowers to form. This natural phenomenon is rare, and only happens when air temperatures are below freezing, but the ground is not yet frozen.

When the air temperatures are below freezing and the ground is moist but not frozen, water travels up the plant stems and begins to expand.

The stem then splits open, and the water is exposed to the freezing air temperature. Wispy sheets of ice then extrude through these slits in the plant stem creating the feathery curls and ribbons of ice we call frost flowers.

You can see frost flowers on cold mornings, but it's a rare sight that doesn't last long. As soon as the sun hits, they melt quickly. Have you ever seen these rare beauties before?
