Driver behind our weather
Video: How El Niño impacts us worldwide

The El Niño Southern Oscillation is a key driver behind much of our weather worldwide, but how so?

Imagine a force that connects our oceans and skies, moulding global weather patterns and shaping our conditions. That force is the climate phenomenon known as the El Niño Southern Oscillation.

It involves a critical interaction between the oceans and atmosphere characterised by two phases: El Niño and La Niña. We are currently in an El Niño phase, which produces warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific.

An El Niño phase has been thought to suppress Atlantic hurricane formation too, though that has been battling against the Atlantic running warmer than usual too, with the warm water also acting as fuel for tropical storms.

But it isn't just limited to the tropical Pacific. Warmer sea surface temperatures here can actually contribute to increasing average global surface temperatures and overall warming across the globe.

Meteorologist Tamsin Green explains in more detail in the video above how each phase impacts our weather systems, and what we have been witnessing across the world so far as a result.

Forest fires are getting out of control. Spain and France. . . Saturday, 25 July 2026
A split-screen image featuring a photograph and a weather map. On the left, thick, dark-grey smoke rises from several fire sites in a wooded coastal area; a calm stretch of water can be seen in the foreground. On the right, a weather map shows south-western France and northern Spain. A red arrow points from the Atlantic towards the French Atlantic coast, symbolising an onshore wind. Sunny weather is forecast for Bordeaux at around 20 degrees, and Bilbao is also expected to be sunny at around 27 degrees. A large warning sign with a flame symbol indicates an increased risk of forest fires.

Super Typhoon Bavi threatens Taiwan. Up to 1,000 mm of rain. . . Wednesday, 8 July 2026
The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
