Up to 80 mm in a day - Record rainfall in eastern Germany

Up to 80 mm in a day
Record rainfall in eastern Germany

There was a deluge of rainfall in eastern Germany on Sunday as a front circled around Berlin, repeatedly dumping rain on the same areas. As a result, record rainfall totals were recorded within 24 hours.

Weather stations, particularly in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg and Berlin, recorded widespread daily rainfall of 30 to 50 mm per square metre. In some places, as much as 80 mm fell.

Previous records "shattered"

By way of comparison: the long-term average for Berlin is around 30 mm per square metre for the whole of April. In some places, therefore, more than double the average monthly rainfall fell in a single day. In many locations, existing monthly or even all-time records for 24-hour rainfall were significantly surpassed.

Due to the heavy rain, roads were flooded and water levels had already risen significantly. On Monday morning, there will be another heavy downpour, after which the rain will move southwards.
