Unstable weather due to jet stream: No summer high in sight

No summer high in sight
Unstable weather due to jet stream

The map shows the wind at an altitude of approximately 9 kilometres next weekend.

In many parts of Europe, the summer has been consistently unsettled.

Even in popular holiday destinations in Spain, Italy and Greece, there have been occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms. But what is the reason for this?

The reason lies in the established general weather pattern. The jet stream, a band of strong winds at an altitude of 9 kilometres, repeatedly passed over Central Europe. At times, it even reached the Mediterranean.

Low-pressure areas follow the jet stream like a motorway and can even intensify as a result, at the moment it is passing through Ireland and south-west England.

The jet stream will continue to linger over Central Europe into August. This means that consistent summer weather is not in sight for most countries in this region.

If it continues to move further south, the weather will also become more changeable in Spain, southern France, Italy, and Croatia.
