Tropical Storm Trami strikes Philippines

Tropical Storm Trami wreaks havoc in the Philippines, leaving over 20 fatalities so far.

On the main Luzon island of the Philippines, Trami, known locally as Kristine, produced widespread flooding and triggered landslides.

The tropical storm brought wind gusts close to 100 mph, with sustained winds up to 60 mph. The Bicol peninsula was the hardest hit area.

Here, over one months worth of rain poured into the area within 24 hours.

150,000 have had to evacuate, while thousands have been left trapped in floodwaters and over 20 lives have been claimed by the storm so far.

While the Philippines is no stranger to tropical storms and typhoons, Trami dumped an unprecedented amount of rain.

On a typical year, the country sees approximately 20 tropical storms, though recent years have seen them grow stronger and increasingly destructive.
