The official start: Atlantic hurricane season

Atlantic hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season officially starts on the 1st June, but what does that mean?

Every year, the Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from 1st June to 30th November. This period was chosen by the National Hurricane Center because 97% of all tropical storms in the Atlantic occur then.

The peak of the season occurs between mid-August and mid-October, with 10th September marking the official peak date.

However this does not mean that tropical systems can't form outside of these dates. In fact, the season start came early seven years in a row between 2015 and 2021, most of those in May.

Despite this, the dates don't look to be changing. This is because many of the earlier storms are generally short-lived and are only being officially identified because of improvements in monitoring and social policy changes.

You can keep track of the tropics with us via our interactive WeatherRadar and WindRadar. We'll be keeping you updated as any systems start brewing!
