The countdown begins: Christmas lights turn on despite Ciarán

The countdown to Christmas is officially on, especially for those in London, as their Christmas lights will be the first in the UK and Ireland to be switched on later on today.

It's not the best timing given the arrival of Storm Ciarán, but the first of this year's Christmas lights is still set to switch on is Oxford Street's in London, from today, Thursday November 2nd, despite severe weather warnings in place.

This year like last year will continue its sustainable theme as 5000 stars light up the street this year, consisting of 300,000 LED lights for lower energy consumption.

Oxford Street is partnering up with children's charity Starlight, with the public able to sponsor one of the 5000 stars to help raise money.

Next up is Carnaby Street, which has a different theme each year. This year, it's 'Carnaby Universe', where neon colours and light waves will take over the street from November 2nd. Covent Garden begins its festive period on November 7th.

The Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square will be switched on at 6pm on December 7th, accompanied by a choir singing Christmas carols. It's the tallest tree installed each year in London. Regent Street's lights are also scheduled from November 9th.

The rest of the UK and Ireland will generally see their Christmas lights switch on from mid-November onwards too. Be sure to send in your Christmas lights snaps if you take a trip to see any.
