Over 40 years ago, Britain experienced one of the coldest and snowiest winters on record, termed 'The Big Snow'.

The winter of 1981-82 saw one of the coldest Decembers ever recorded. The 12th-13th in particular saw temperatures widely plunge below -18C, with much of the country then snowbound for nearly one month.

With the cold snap taking grip on this day 42 years ago, Shawbury, Shropshire saw temperatures fall to -25.2C on 13 December, the coldest December temperature on record for England.

Wales also recorded their lowest ever temperature for the month on December 13, with -22.7C at Corwen, Denbighshire.

The lowest UK-wide record was felt in Scotland, with -27.2C at Braemar, Aberdeenshire, though this was not until January 10th, 1982. On that same day, Newport then recorded -26.1C, the all-time minimum temperature for England.

Historic storms

The storm of 13 December 1981 was noted as one of the worst blizzards for SW England and Wales in the last 50 years, along with the blizzards of 8/9 January 1982 and 18 February 1978.

At the same time, a storm surge affected the Bristol Channel as the gale-force winds swung to the west, overtopping sea defences in Somerset and causing quite extensive flooding.

A split-screen image featuring a photograph and a weather map. On the left, thick, dark-grey smoke rises from several fire sites in a wooded coastal area; a calm stretch of water can be seen in the foreground. On the right, a weather map shows south-western France and northern Spain. A red arrow points from the Atlantic towards the French Atlantic coast, symbolising an onshore wind. Sunny weather is forecast for Bordeaux at around 20 degrees, and Bilbao is also expected to be sunny at around 27 degrees. A large warning sign with a flame symbol indicates an increased risk of forest fires.

Super Typhoon Bavi threatens Taiwan. Up to 1,000 mm of rain. . . Wednesday, 8 July 2026
The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
