    Taking precautions in the sun

UV protection
Taking precautions in the sun

As spring weather reigns, UV levels are at elevated levels so it is important to take precautions in the sun.

Looking at the UV-index, any level at three or above is considered harmful. In the UK and Ireland we tend to see highs reaching seven by summer.

When UV levels are forecast this high, it means there is a risk of burning within 30-60 minutes with individuals advised to keep out of direct sunlight around midday.

It is also important to make sure protective clothing is worn and sun screen with an SPF of 30+ is applied every two hours to prevent sunburn and irritation.

Protective clothing could include hats or caps to shield the face with wraparound sunglasses. Long-sleeves are also recommended with sun screen on exposed skin.

You can check UV levels in your area on the Weather & Radar detailed forecast page.
