Supermoon rises on Bonfire Night - Largest full moon of the year

Supermoon over bonfires
Largest full moon of the year

full moon in the sky

Wednesday is the day: it's full moon. That's why our Earth's companion is shining brightly in the sky these days. But it is also special in its own way.

The November full moon is the largest this year and is therefore a so-called "supermoon" because the moon is currently almost 30,000 kilometres closer to Earth than average. However, the difference in size compared to a normal full moon is hardly noticeable. At best, it appears brighter than usual.

Did you know?

The full moon in November is also known as the "Fog Moon" due to the season. In North America, however, it is called the "Beaver Moon" because the indigenous people used to hunt beavers at this time of year.

The weather for observing the moon is perfect in many parts of Europe: from Italy to Central Europe, the sky is usually cloudless in the evening before fog patches spread across some regions.
