It's been a wet and windy week, just like a year ago, where on this day Storm Agnes kicked off the 2023/24 storm season.

The storm hit Ireland not only first, but also hardest, with wind gusts recorded over 80 mph.

In the UK, the peak wind gusts reached 83 mph at Capel Curig in North Wales, while in Ireland, the Sherkin Island weather station reported a peak of 73 mph.

Torrential rain produced maximum rainfall totals of 44.6 mm in Ballypatrick Forest in Northern Ireland, with severe flooding reported in several other areas such as Limerick, Cork and Dublin.

The strongest winds whipped around the south and east coast of Ireland, channelling through the Irish Sea where large waves were generated.

Power cuts were reported widely across Ireland, particularly in southern areas such as Cork where the fierce winds tore roofs off of some buildings.

It marked a start to the busiest storm season since the practice of naming storms began in 2015 with a total of 12 named storms, the most on record.

Despite the severe weather conditions seen in recent weeks, we are still yet to see the first named storm of the new season.

When it arrives, this will be Storm Ashley, we'll keep you updated on the possibility and arrival of this system, whenever it may form.
