What should you plant in May?

By now the main risk of overnight frost to your gardens is starting to pass, so what should you be planting in May?

For vegetables, this month is a good time to plant beetroot. This is an especially good choice for those not experienced in growing fresh food as it requires little maintenance.

Carrots are also a nice and easy choice to grow from seed when sowed in shallow soil while runner beans can now be sown outside but be aware of pests.

For herbs you could opt for basil which thrives with plenty of sunshine and heat, both of which are growing in abundance. This is also a good choice for those without the necessary garden space and may wish to start a windowsill herb garden.

When it comes to flowers this is the perfect time to sow sunflowers outdoors ready for a vibrant summer bloom.

Poppies are also in season and when in bloom will help attract butterflies, bees, and other pollen-attracted insects to the garden.
