The popular holiday destination and island of Crete has been plagued by heavy rainfall, a result of a disturbance in the eastern Mediterranean.

Torrential autumn rains brought devastating flash flooding to the Greek island of Crete on October 15th 2022. The intense downpours caused roads to rapidly turn to rivers, dangerously sweeping cars away in the water.

Major flooding was reported from Heraklion airport, where several flights had been suspended and diverted. At least one man is reported to have lost his life, whilst two others are still missing and several others were in need of urgent rescue.

The dramatic images below were captured from the village of Agia Pelagia in Heraklion, showing cars swept away by the fury of the water, even ending up in the sea.
