Winter is having a comeback across the US, as heavy snowfall encased large swathes of several states this weekend.

Parts of the US are currently being hit by severe winter storms. At the beginning of this week, areas from the Great Plains to the Midwest were affected by heavy snowfall and gale-force winds.

The authorities issued winter storm warnings for Monday and Tuesday, 25th and 26th March.

The cold air flowing in from the north is met by warm and humid air in the south of the country. Strong thunderstorms have formed along that boundary as a result too, as seen below.

Over the weekend, heavy snowfall in the north-east caused power cuts and dangerously icy roads across the states of New England. Over 200,000 households in Maine, New Hampshire and New York were left temporarily without electricity.

In some places, the winter storm brought snow depths of 60 to 80 centimetres. Further south in New York City, heavy rainfall flooded streets and caused problems and disruption for the underground subway services.
