Europe shivering already this autumn

Whilst we're already feeling the chill in the British Isles, temperatures across other parts of Europe are plummeting to record lows.

Florina in Greece, 617m asl, saw an overnight minimum of -1.4C on September 25th, breaking the previous September record. The average minimum temperature here during this time of year is 11.4C.

Meanwhile, -11.3C was recorded in Vathistalos/Mt. Parnassos, 1780m asl, which is the coldest temperature ever recorded in Greece in September.

Across Italy, Capanna Margherita in Monte Rosa dropped to -21.2C during the early hours of September 17th 2022.

This breaks the previous coldest temperature measured for the day in 2013, which was -19.7C on September 17th 2013. It also is the earliest temperatures have dropped below -20C in a season.

Many places also experienced their first snowfall of the season at the weekend with temperatures dropping 5-10C below average widely across Europe, owing to arctic winds blowing in from the north.

High ski slopes in the Alps have seen their second September snowfalls in a fortnight, this time with up to 20cm reported so far, with more forecast.

Throughout the summer months, Hintertux in Austria was the only ski area that managed to stay open, however Austria's Solden and Switzerland’s Zermatt have also now re-opened, following recent snow.

Several resorts in Italy are also open already and Les 2 Alpes and Tignes are expected to follow suit in mid-October.
