Record-breaking June heatwave in Europe: temperatures set to exceed 40 degrees

Almost 40 degrees
Record-breaking June heatwave in Europe

Europe is sweltering: the heatwave has reached almost everywhere, and it’s set to get even hotter over the next few days. We might even see some record-breaking temperatures.

On Monday, temperatures will exceed 40 degrees in some parts of Spain and France. In Germany, the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands, maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 35 degrees. In some regions, this could be enough to set new June records.

In the Netherlands, the June record of 35.6 degrees in De Bilt is a thing of the past. It was recorded on 27 June 1947. This record could be under threat as early as Tuesday.

New records may also be set in Extremadura, in western Spain. However, the record high of 46 degrees, recorded on 28 June 2025 in El Granado (Huelva), is likely to stand.

Tips for hot weather

Anyone spending time outdoors should drink plenty of fluids, avoid direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day and keep an eye on the latest heatwave warnings.

Although it does not look as though France will set a new national record for June, the heatwave is nonetheless exceptional in terms of its intensity and duration. Things are set to get particularly exciting in Paris: a record that has stood for almost 80 years could also be broken there. The previous June record of 37.6 degrees, set in 1947, is hanging in the balance.
