Reaching 25°C this week
Winter break in Spain?

temperature radar

If you're off on a winter break in sunny Spain any time soon, well you might just be in luck.

Temperatures are currently reaching the mid-to-high twenties through this week, and temperatures in Valencia have already soared to 28°C on Thursday 25th January.

The national record for January is held at 29.8°C in Alicante from 2021, and though it may not surpass this, plenty of weather stations are expected to set their own records.

It still gets chilly during the night-times though, with drastic diurnal temperature swings as figures fall down to 2°C to 3°C in some spots further inland.

Even on the coast, Murcia could see temperatures rise to 27°C by day on Thursday 25th January, dropping down to 7°C overnight.

Just last week snow was accumulating in the mountains, though with the extreme heat that is expected to disappear this week.

Not all good news

The drought however is currently critical, with reservoir levels at around 50%. The worst affected areas are Catalonia, with reservoir levels of 16%, followed by Andalusia at 21.9% and Murcia at 25.6%.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), Spain has been in a long-term drought status since 2022, however many regions have been dealing with water shortages for well over two years.

There have been bans on washing cars, filling swimming pools, and watering gardens, unless done so by collected rainwater.

Spain is also responsible for producing around half of the world’s olive oil, though the price of a one litre bottle has risen over 50% as result of the drought.
