Rainy winter help
England is officially drought-free

Map of Europe showing February rainfall anomaly, with blue shading indicating wetter-than-average conditions over the UK and parts of western Europe, and yellow tones showing drier conditions across Scandinavia and eastern regions.
Above average rain in February, and across winter, lifts England from drought.

All regions of England are now drought-free, after above average rainfall throughout the winter season.

Confirmation on Monday that East Anglia has been reclassified away from recovery and back to normal status mean that after four months of rain, there are no regions left in drought.

It comes after a particularly wet February, seeing 170% of the long-term average rainfall, while March so far has seen 53% of the long-term average.

Total reservoir capacity is at 95% although some reservoirs in Essex, Cambridgeshire, and Derbyshire remain below average for this time of the year.

East Anglia was the last region remaining with sluggish rainfall, meanwhile the south-west recorded the second highest December to February amounts since records began.

Across the UK, northern areas of Scotland remain under watch as of March, while the surplus rain resulted in flooding throughout winter for many.
