Devastating floods and landslides have claimed the lives of over 400 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Neighbouring countries are also affected.

In central Africa, severe flooding and landslides in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo have killed around 400 people. The number of dead continues to rise, and many people are still missing with recovery proving difficult.

After heavy rainfall, several rivers burst their banks in the region west of Lake Kivu. The floods swept away hundreds of houses and destroyed numerous fields.

Tens of thousands of people have been internally displaced because they have had to flee hunger and violence in their villages.

Neighbouring countries also hit by storms

In Rwanda on the other side of Lake Kivu, more than 130 people lost their lives. Thousands have been left homeless, while in Uganda, at least six people have died.

Flooding is not uncommon in the South Kivu region, especially during the two rainy seasons of the year. The current rainy season is coming to an end this month.
