Open for Atlantic lows - Jet stream brings a change

Open for Atlantic lows
Jet stream brings a change

The jet stream is swinging back over Central and Western Europe. This will allow a westerly flow to take hold, giving Atlantic lows free rein once again to bring unsettled weather to the UK and Ireland.

Did you know?

The jet stream is a band of strong winds at an altitude of around 10 kilometres. It directs low-pressure systems from the Atlantic towards Europe and has a significant influence on whether the weather is calm or changeable.

The wind is picking up noticeably, and rain, showers, and thunderstorms are sweeping through. In many places, the rain is eagerly awaited: nature can breathe a sigh of relief, and it comes at just the right time for farmers.

Temperatures are dropping in many countries. In Brussels, Paris, and London, temperatures will not reach 20 degrees, marking the end of the mild early summer weather.

Just last week, things were completely different

In the second half of May, summer weather was already widespread. The jet stream gave Central and Western Europe a wide berth, meaning the weather remained warm and dry. In Spain and France, May temperature records were even broken, in addition to those here in the UK and Ireland.
