Morning commute disrupted
Snowy start to spring in Ireland

Parts of central to eastern Ireland greeted spring with the arrival of a very wintry snowy shower this morning with poor conditions for commuters.

The snowfall has resulted in major travel issues in parts of the country, with trains halted earlier in the day on the Maynooth line to Dublin. While this is now running again, long delays persist.

On the roads, the M50 saw long delays with one area, close to the junction for Dundrum, seeing drivers abandon cars due to the slippery conditions on a sharp incline.

Some schools have closed across Cavan, Leitrim, and Longford, while the Dublin Fire Brigade has urged drivers to take extra precautions.

Cavan County Council went a step further, asking drivers not to travel unless necessary. The message came after reports of HGVs becoming stuck in areas due to impassable roads from the snow.

In Northern Ireland, weather warnings for snow cover western regions.

The frontal system responsible for this snowfall is pivoting through the day. Also bringing snow to northern England and parts of southern Wales later this evening.

Overnight, the snow will depart from south-east Ireland as the system sweeps back around to the south-west of England.

Into the weekend, snow will greet the Saturday early risers in many parts of the UK but most prominently in the West Midlands with rain following in behind. Check the situation on the WeatherRadar.
