More sleet, snow and ice causing travel disruption

10:20
21 November 2024

Cold start to the day!
New round of sleet and snow for some

Another spell of sleet and snow has been affecting parts of Ireland and southwestern England overnight and this morning, bringing further disruption to travel in places.

Some roads have been treacherous with several accidents reported across parts of western and southern Ireland on Thursday morning. There are also reports of localised power outages in Counties Galway and Mayo due to heavy, wet snow and, in some cases, lightning damage.

Parts of southwest England have also seen sleet and snow, with snow mainly accumulating above about 100 to 200 metres above sea level. Up to 15cm of snow was reported over high ground such as Dartmoor and traffic on the A30 in Devon has come to a standstill at times because of heavy snow and low visibility.

Further north, parts of Scotland continue to be affected by wintry showers as well, whilst central and eastern parts of the UK are seeing much quieter and drier weather.

However, temperatures dropped to -5C or below in many places overnight where skies remained mostly clear, with Topcliffe in North Yorkshire reporting -8.7C earlier this morning, the coldest temperature so far this autumn in England.
