On Thursday afternoon, severe storms swept across northern Poland. One of which brought hailstones the size of tennis balls, with a diameter of up to seven centimetres.

The village of Lubomino, near the border of Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast, was particularly hard hit.

Photos on social media from the regions of Warmia and Masuria show damaged car windows, trees stripped of their leaves, and a destroyed construction crane. The fire service was in constant action.

Large hailstones also fell around the towns of Lidzbark Warmiński, Kętrzyn and Kisielice, as well as to the east of Malbork. In addition, more than 30 mm of rain fell in the affected areas. The gusts of wind reached gale force in places.

Since the start of the week, severe thunderstorms have been sweeping across Poland repeatedly. Within 24 hours, more than 12,000 strikes of ground and cloud lightning were recorded in some parts of the country. However, conditions are now calming down again.
