June temperature record broken

A new record June temperature has been set in Surrey.

On a day with just the second red extreme heat warning in history, the UK's June temperature record has been broken in Surrey.

Record still rising

The new June record is continuing to rise. Now with a high of 36 °C in Wisley, Surrey.

The existing high of 35.6 °C was met twice, once in 1957 and again during the infamous 1976 heatwave.

Now, a new provisional record for June stands at 35.7 °C, recorded at Charlwood, Surrey, Wednesday afternoon.

This is expected to be broken again in the coming days before the heatwave finally eases.

The all-time UK heat record of 40.3 °C could also be under threat by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, in Ireland, the June and all-time high of 33.3 °C has stood since 1887 and is unlikely to be broken with highs hovering around 30 °C.
