In the UK and Ireland
Flooding reported as warnings extend

Weather map with flood warningFlood warnings extend across the UK and Ireland today due to persistent rain and high tides.

More than 200 flood warnings are in effect across the UK and Ireland as heavy rain continues.

Many of these warnings cover southern, central England where just under 200 warnings in total are active.

Flood warnings change throughout the day, according to water levels and weather patterns. Rainfall is forecast over the coming days which is likely to result in more warnings being issued.

Floods have already caused disruption in Bristol this morning where train services were cancelled and roads closed due to surface water.

Separate systems

There is no central flood warning organisation in the UK. England, Wales, Scotland, and N. Ireland all have local systems to issue warnings.

In Bristol, floodwater from the River Avon caused the disruption with parts of the A4 Portway route close to the Clifton Suspension Bridge shut.

Floodgates and locks have been shut to try to prevent further issues in the city, while warnings are also in place in along the southern Welsh coast in areas close to Swansea, Cardiff, and Newport.

In Ireland, flood warnings are issued within wider weather warnings. The counties of Cork and Kerry both see extensive warnings in place.

The combination of heavy rain and high tides are combining to exacerbate the issue.

Last October, County Cork saw widespread flooding after the arrival of Storm Babet. Cork County Council say full recovery could take up to two years and an estimated €55 million.
