Hours of relentless rain
Landslips and major flooding in Scotland

While much of the UK and Ireland is basking in warm sunshine this weekend, it's a different story for Scotland.

After hours of relentless rain throughout Saturday 7th October, over 100 mm of rain has already been reported with Melfort in Argyll seeing that amount of rain fall in just nine hours.

This is the equivalent of two weeks worth of rain, with up to a month's worth expected as rain continues to fall.

The cause of this weather event is a phenomenon called an "atmospheric river", whereby moist subtropical air is being transported up from the south-west, with a near-stationary front driving in relentless rain.

Across Grangemouth in the Central Belt, roads and even cars are inundated under the floodwaters.

Multiple landslips have also been reported leading to major road closures, with ten people needing to be airlifted to safety. Railway lines have also closed following the extreme heavy rain.

According to SEPA, Scotland's Environmental Protection Agency, 17 Regional Flood Alerts & 50 Local Flood Warnings are in place, with extensive river and surface water flooding expected.

Several sporting events have been called off this weekend, including the Alfred Dunhill Links Golf Championship, Dundee's Scottish Premiership game, and Dunfermline's Championship following waterlogged pitches and fields.

Dozens of hay bails were also washed down the River Aray, swept away by the floodwaters.

Heavy rain is expected to continue in places through the night and into Sunday morning, 8th October, before easing up as the day wears on.
